Lyrics

CHURCH ON SYNAGOGUE STREET

It was sometime after midnight when I woke up on the floor
And I saw an angel make a mark in blood on my front door
I thought it was the End of Days and, wrapped in just my sheet,
I stumbled through the smoke and haze to the church on Synagogue Street

In the stained glass morning light the Earth is newly born
The underworld of night stuck in my brain just like a thorn
If I dreamed for a thousand years those dreams could not compete
With the history or the mystery of the church on Synagogue Street

Living out here in suburbia, yes, I thought we had it good
Till terrorists moved in next door and ruined the neighborhood
Then zombies overwhelmed us and we beat a quick retreat
To the problematic refuge of the church on Synagogue Street

There comes a prophet to anoint the feet of the chosen few
I pray I will not disappoint if I am chosen too…

(harmonica break)

“For You I would do anything,” said father Abraham
“Now, tell me the identity of the sacrificial lamb…”

When Aaron saw the Golden Calf he knew not what to say
His people were so joyful that he let ‘em have their way
But Moses bowed to the burning bush and the Hebrews felt the heat
They feel it too in every pew of the church on Synagogue Street

The doctor read the x-ray, then he shook his head and said
“I can’t say why and I don’t know when but someday you’ll be dead”
I said, “That doesn’t worry me ‘cause the afterlife is sweet
I’m just telling you what they told me in the church on Synagogue Street”

At the ending of this perfect day no anthem will be sung
There is no country for old men, no country for the young
I look behind and I look ahead and try to make ends meet
Like every patriotic soul in the church on Synagogue Street
Just like every lost and lonely soul in the church on Synagogue Street
